| Introduction | Rotaviruses are dsRNA viruses that infect humans and livestock. Infection is mediated via contact with contaminated matter, and transmitted via the fecal-oral route. The virus replicates predominantly in intestinal enterocytes and enterochromaffin cells, causing their destruction. Additionally, the virus induces chloride secretion into the lumen, causing diarrhoea, and the infected enterochromaffin cells release serotonin, causing nausea and vomiting. The infection is typically cleared in approximately 1 week,with minimal risk if enough fluids and electrolytes are available to the patient (which is not always achievable in developing regions). Vaccines against the pathogen are available and have been linked to a reduced incidence of type I diabetes |
