HEPES is a buffer that is widely used in biological research, particularly in cell and tissue culture. It is zwitterionic at physiological pH and has negligible metal ion binding, and therefore has little to no effect on the vast majority of biochemical reactions. It has a pKa of 7.5 (at 25 °C) and is effective between pH 6.8-8.2.
