| Introduction | Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) is a zinc-binding protease involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM). MMP9 is secreted as a zymogen that is inactive until another protease (typically MMP3) removes the inhibiting peptide sequence. The degradation of ECM by MMP9 is also used by neutrophils to infiltrate tissues. MMP9 has been shown to degrade the cartilage of the joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and allows cancer metastasis by removing ECM barriers. Low expression levels of MMP9 have been associated with more severe airway inflammation during allergic reactions, and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women. |
