| Introduction | Papillomaviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that infect various animals, including turtles, fish, snakes, mice, chimpanzees, and humans. Most Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) are relatively harmless, leading to asymptomatic infections or various kinds of warts. HPV-18 is more dangerous; the lesions it causes to the genital and anal areas are precancerous, where an additional injury (such as Herpes Simplex Virus 2 infection, usage of hormonal contraceptives, or smoking) can lead to cancer. HPV is the most common sexually-transmitted infection, and while there is no specific treatment for it, vaccines have been developed against it to prevent infection. |
