| Introduction | Parathyroid Hormone-Related Protein (PTHrP) is a member of the parathyroid hormone family, which in humans includes this protein and Parathyroid Hormone (PTH). PTHrP is responsible for regulating bone metabolism and mammary gland development. In the jaw, it causes localised resorption of bone before the teeth are pushed into the oral cavity, while in the breast it stimulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition to form and maintain the mammary glands. PTHrP is overexpressed in some cancers, where it leads to hypercalcemia. Mutations in its gene are associated with type E brachydactyly. |
