Introduction | Simian Herpes Virus B (also known as Macacine alphaherpesvirus 1) is a member of the herpes virus family found in macaque monkeys. Like other alphaherpesviruses, sHVB is a dsDNA virus and infects the peripheral nerves. In monkeys this creates herpes-like symptoms – recurring sores on localised parts of the body – while in humans a zoonotic infection can be severe, with symptoms including rash, adenopathy, and spinal cord infection. Aciclovir and ganciclovir have some use in treating infections, with the remaining options consisting of supportive care. |
