| Introduction | Complement Component C5 (typically abbreviated to just C5) is a part of the complement cascade. It is found as an inactive protein in serum, but can be cleaved into two active peptides (C5a and C5b) by one of two different C5 convertases; C4b2b3b, or C3bBb3b. Once cleaved, the C5a fragment acts as an anaphylatoxin that binds on the C5a-receptor on the surface of various leukocytes and triggering immune activation. C5b causes the downstream complement proteins (C6-C9) to form the membrane attack complex on the surface of pathogens. Mutations and deficiencies in C5 are associated with severe recurrent infections. |
