Xylene Cyanol FF is a blue-black powder that is soluble in ethanol. In aqueous solution, it can be used as a blue tracking dye during agarose or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It has a slight negative charge and migrates in the same direction as DNA, with the migration rate varying with gel composition. It can also be used as a redox indicator and as a biological stain.
