| Introduction | Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) is a +ssRNA group 3 coronavirus that infects birds, typically chickens. The virus targets and disrupts ciliated epithelial cells, causing an accumulation of mucus and the death of infected cells. This results in respiratory distress and asphyxiation, as well as abnormalities in egg shells. Strains vary by geographic region; approximately 25% of these also cause kidney infections in infected birds. Infection with the virus causes substantial losses to egg and meat production, and as such a vaccine usually is a cost-effective method of preventing this. |
